Overall Thoughts

1. This year I wrote and posted:
20 one-shots: 16 fics in English and 2 of them translated in French, 2 French fics
+2 fics for zines that are still in production
2 longfics: one in French and ongoing, one in English and complete for a fandom week

Total word count (English + French): 119 988

2. What were your goals for writing going into this year? Did you achieve them?
I had no goal for 2020, in 2019 I was hitting a dry spell and didn’t find much enjoyment in writing except for a few ideas. But in March, after playing the game, I wrote almost exclusively for Fire Emblem Three Houses until the end of the year. It was and still is such a big source of inspiration because I got sucked into caring for only a handful of characters whose stories can be developed and explored from so many angles. So I guess I tried to do that? To show how different they are depending on the path they chose and the people they are surrounded with. I wouldn’t say I managed to achieve this goal since I still have a lot of WIPs to write, but I’m satisfied with what I’ve done so far!

3. What did you try this year that didn't succeed?
Finishing my longfic lol I thought I would be able to write an entire chapter fic before the end of the year but I got commitments and other ideas so… And the original plot grew legs, which made the word count skyrocket.

4. What was the state of your WIPs in the beginning of the year, and what's their state now?
Still the same: too many to count. I lost interest in almost all of my WIPs from before 2020, there might be some ideas that I still want to finish but for now I want to write my new WIPs while I still have the inspiration for them haha Though I’m learning that abandoning an idea or rewriting it entirely isn’t a loss!

5. Any miscellaneous thoughts on this year?
I’ll say that getting into a new fandom right before everything IRL started to go up in flames was actually a blessing for me. I had something to do and a piece of media to enjoy in-between commitments; I met so many people and I realize now that sharing ideas/thoughts with them helped me not feeling lonely since I couldn’t go out.

I’m also more careful about the way I tell stories now. I’ve always tried to be more of a concise and direct writer rather than using a lot of imagery (mostly because I’m bad at it haha), but this year I’m a lot more conscious about it.

6. Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you'd predicted?
Definitely more! I actually didn’t realize how much I was putting out until I looked at my stats in the middle of the year.

7. What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January?
Gestures at the FE3H fandom……. Oh and I finally tried my hand at epistolary fic! Not very successful but I like the genre a lot, so I might make another attempt later.

8. What's your own favorite story of the year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you happiest?
the rust under their binds. I know I cannot shut up about it but it’s really everything I love writing about, from the themes of friendship, loyalty and stubbornness to the entire mess that is the Faerghus Four. And gruesome battlefield. Over the years I grew more fond of describing the atmosphere of a battlefield and not the battle itself. So yeah, this fic is the most Me!

9. Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?
This is going to be weird to say but, writing in French aha I wrote a drabble in 2019 but other than that the last time I wrote in French was in 2018. I still don’t have the level I want (or wanted to recover) so I need to work harder and to read more! Writing in two languages feels like two separate worlds because words don’t have the same meaning and the rhythm is different, I caught myself using structures from one language to another. I wouldn’t say it’s a bad thing per se, since we can draw inspiration from one style to another and adjust it for the target language.

X Of the Year

10. Your best story of this year:
holding my ground, upon a burial mound. Dimitri is a complex character and I wanted to explore how the events of the Crimson Flower route would affect him, on top of diving into interpersonal relationships. It took me a while to write it but I’m really happy with the result!

11. Your most popular story of this year:
By literally everything (kudos, comments, hits, bookmarks) it’s flambeau, so the single non-FE3H fic LOL I’m not complaining though because it’s my favorite CQL/MDZS fic I’ve written.

12. Story of yours most under-appreciated by the universe, in your opinion:
Hmmm hard to say, maybe farewell, i love you? I really liked the atmosphere and the format of this one, but I guess people didn’t want to read a story about Felix dying and Sylvain despairing during Sylvix week jskdn Sorry I write a lot of angst,,

13. Most fun story to write:
That one veers into French territory with Brancher les émotions au bon endroit (a title I found funny, “Plugging the emotions in the right place”). The concept isn’t original since it’s about Sylvain setting up Felix with redheads until he realized he’s in love with him, but I wanted to write it with absurd third person limited POV narration. It’s also kind of a Sylvain character study disguised as a humorous fic.

14. Story with the single sexiest moment:
I can’t write porn even if my life depended on it……..

15. Story that shifted your own perceptions of the characters:
Maybe one breath apart, I know that Annette is a strong woman who doesn’t give up but this fic helped me get a better grasp on her voice!

16. Hardest story to write:
and you bring me love, without hesitation!! Romantic and fluffy fics aren’t my forte and I tried my best to make the characters grow even in a plotless fic. The hardest part was showing how in love Sylvain was without making it too cheesy.

17. Biggest disappointment:
I don’t really like the pace and the style of again and together. I love writing assassins AUs but I’ve lost my touch, it’s not as brutal and intense as I originally planned it to be.

18. Biggest surprise:
weight!! I really like how well it flows, it gives characterization to both Roy and Annette and it’s a very satisfying piece overall.

19. Most unintentionally telling story:
weight, again, because being a hard working person makes you put huge unnecessary pressure on yourself.

20. Top 5 scenes from anywhere you would choose to have illustrated:
Jiang Cheng and Jiang Yanli in the final scene of flambeau
Sylvain and Dimitri talking in the gardens in holding my ground, upon a burial mound
Dimitri touching Felix’s ribbon in for you, tenderness
Sylvain wrapping his arms around Felix in hardened heart
Roy and Annette sparring in weight

21. Fic-writing goals for next year:
Finish my longfic, write different character POVs. Mostly, continue enjoying what I’m currently writing and not feeling obligated to have regular published works. Take breaks when necessary, write the idea I want even if it's too much into my comfort zone; writing for your own pleasure is as important as trying new things to improve.
